APPEARANCE. Richie Tozier.
IN CHARACTER
HISTORY. Richie was born in Derry, Maine, a small town with few attractions. While his parents were pleasant enough people, they were never particularly fond of Richie, and as he grew older they developed a sense of shame and disappointment towards him. Their relationship continued to disintegrate as he grew older, and by the time he graduated high school they were no longer on speaking terms.
Richie's childhood was relatively normal, despite the fact that he was part of what he dubbed the "Losers Club" - a group of kids who were unpopular at school and banded together as a result. He had several close friends, and spent his summers doing typical kid things: riding his bike, playing games at the arcade, and dodging the attacks of the local bullies who regularly targeted him.
At the age of twelve, children started going missing at an alarming rate in Derry. As Richie and his friends discovered, this was the work of a shapeshifting alien creature they called "It", who appeared in the town every twenty-seven years to feast on the fear of its victims. Together with the other Losers, Richie tracked It through the sewers of Derry and eventually succeeded in defeating the monster. The rest of his school years went on much as the previous ones had, with no further appearances from It.
However, after moving away from Derry to pursue his dream of becoming a comedian, Richie's memories of his childhood began to vanish. Soon he was no longer able to remember anything that happened in Derry, including his friends and their desperate fight. It was only when fellow Loser Mike Hanlon called him twenty-seven years later that Richie was able to recall the promise they all made: if It reappeared, they would journey back to Derry and kill It once and for all.
Despite having a successful career and being terrified of what he would face, Richie kept his promise and returned to Derry with the other Losers - save for Stan Uris, who chose to commit suicide rather than risk being too afraid to fight. The more time Richie spent in Derry, the more he began to remember his life there. Together with his friends, he faced It one last time and managed to finally destroy the monster that had been terrorizing the town for centuries. Unfortunately, his best friend, Eddie Kaspbrak, died from wounds inflicted by It during their final fight. When we last see Richie, he's leaving Derry and moving on into an uncertain future, his memories regained and his friends at his side.
For the purposes of this game, Richie's history will only go up to the point where he returns to the house on Niebolt to fight It for the last time, while he is facing three doors marked Scary, Very Scary, and Not Scary At All with Eddie Kaspbrak.
PERSONALITY. If you look up the definition of "class clown" in the dictionary, you'll find Richie Tozier's face. Ever since he was a kid he's relied on humor to get him through life, even though his comedic tendencies aren't always the most appropriate. He prefers darker, sexually-oriented jokes, and has a habit of taking things a little bit too far.
Some speculate that Richie's high energy and inability to keep his mouth shut are a result of his upbringing; due to the absence of true affection from his parents, he's spent his life constantly seeking out attention by any means necessary. This carries over into his comedy, where he'll sometimes say things just to provoke a response from others.
However, Richie doesn't just make jokes to get attention. He also uses humor as a coping mechanism: when he's afraid or anxious, he'll crack a joke in order to make the situation less frightening. He also has a difficult time empathizing with others in a meaningful manner; when his friends are worried, for example, he'll joke around instead of hearing them out. Because of this, he has a difficult time connecting deeply with people, and even his friends often tell him to be quiet.
When Richie is truly scared, his true nature comes out. He has a tendency to panic and overreact when he's in danger (whether real or imagined), and will resort to physical violence before trying to logic his way out of the situation. While not an inherently violent person, Richie's large stature (he's over six feet tall) lends itself to physicality. However, this doesn't mean he's not smart - he always managed to get good grades, and he can sort out the risks and benefits of different scenarios with relative ease. That being said, he's generally more inclined to just go for it rather than hang back and spend too long figuring things out.
As an adult, Richie has grown increasingly reliant on alcohol to help him deal with the trauma of his past. While not a full-fledged alcoholic, he knows he has a problem - but he isn't really willing to address it. For Richie, it's always easier to gloss over serious conversations and fall back on his crass humor to avoid talking about difficult subjects. This may also be a result of his parents' absence; he never had role models who showed him how to talk about his feelings. Richie chooses to hide the emptiness he feels as a result of his lost memories behind his comedic facade, and very rarely allows himself to be truly vulnerable.
Despite his outgoing and cheerful personality, Richie is actually a fairly private person. He hides behind the stories he invents, even going so far as to make up imaginary girlfriends and wives to hide the fact that he's actually attracted to men. While he's never truly come out, Richie has always feared that others would guess his true nature just by looking at him - a fear cemented by his parents' shame and disappointment in their son.
Ultimately, Richie is a man who's gained and lost a lot throughout his life. He's capable of figuring things out on his own, but he enjoys the company of others, and feels best when he's making people laugh. He's still searching for something he can't quite define, and this natural curiosity is quite likely to get him into trouble - if his mouth doesn't first.
ABILITIES
STRENGTHS. Richie's greatest strength is his comedic ability. While not to everyone's taste, he is extremely quick-witted and can come up with a volley of jokes at any given moment. He is also talented with what he refers to as "voices", or impressions of caricatures, such as a British doctor. While not any better at it than the average person, Richie is also good at giving pep talks and making people feel good about their own abilities.
WEAKNESSES.Unfortunately, Richie has several character flaws. The most obvious of these is his ability to shut up when things are serious, and his general lack of tact. His crass humor and love of cursing will likely come across as quite rude to many people. He is quick to indulge in alcohol when he feels anxious or upset, and he has a tendency to vomit when under extreme stress.
